Chapter Sixteen

That kiss. Just thinking about it made her toes curl.

Helen was standing in her little kitchen, starting a pot of coffee and thinking about the magical night she’d had with Ethan. They’d danced in the middle of the vineyard, and then he’d finally kissed her.

Her phone rang, and Helen smiled when she saw Ethan’s number.

“Good morning, sleepyhead. Did you rest okay?” His voice was rough, like he’d just woken up himself.

“I did. Having my first cup of coffee right now. Do you want to go buy plywood later?” The tent was scheduled to be delivered to the site today, and the crew had promised them it would be set up well before sundown. With a little luck, they could get started building the floors this evening.

“Absolutely. I checked the inventory of the home improvement store up toward Myrtle Beach this morning. They should have everything in stock. Do you have a lead on a truck to transport it?”

“I do.” Helen had called around for days and finally found someone willing to let them borrow an old moving truck. With their tight deadline, having the plywood delivered hadn’t been an option. It was a good thing she didn’t mind a little manual labor every now and again.

“Great. I’ll meet you at the stables in an hour.”

Helen had to rush through her shower and skip blow drying her hair, which meant her curls were even wilder than usual. Frustrated, she ran her fingers through them and secured them in a messy bun. She glanced at the clock on the stove. If she left right now, she’d have enough time to stop by the Roasted Bean to pick up coffee and donuts for everyone helping to raise the revival tent.

Ethan was waiting for her by the stables. “What’s all this?”

“Bribes for Pastor Lowe’s crew. I can’t believe you talked them into helping us raise the tent.” It had saved a small fortune in the budget, and without it, she doubted this job would end up being profitable.

They carried the treats out to the pasture where the crew was already hard at work. Pastor Lowe and Carter were directing the efforts. A few hours and another coffee run later, the tent was up.

“I think this is going to work,” Helen said, staring at the large off-white tent. The white rose-covered arbor she’d found would match nicely, the blooms almost perfectly matching the color of the tent. With lights strung inside and out, and a few decorative planters scattered about, it would make a romantic venue for the reception after the actual wedding in a small chapel a few miles away.

“Why don’t we take a break before we hit the home improvement store? I could use a shower.” Ethan looked worn out. He’d jumped right in and worked alongside the crew of Pastor Lowe’s worshipers.

Helen nodded before walking over to the good pastor to thank him for all his help.

“It’s the least I could do. Without Mr. Shaw’s generous offer for the tent, I don’t know if we’d be able to afford to replace the roof this year.
